English – Multi Lingua Franca

We use English not as just a lingua Franca but as multi lingua franca, which means that it is foreign to all the participants of the communication.

Basically, it means that successful communication is hardly just language. When we communicate, we need to use other resources such as symbols, historical references, cultural awareness and commutative strategies.

Levels of Intercultural awareness

Level 1.

Basic level. For people on basic level cultures are divided through national boarders. For people at this level it is natural to say “our” and “their” culture. It is based on stereotypes and generalizations

Level 2.

Advanced cultural awareness. People on this level generally understand that the norms of cultures are relative and that any person is a member of many social groupings

Level 3.

Intercultural and transcultural awareness. The person who is culturally aware is able to move beyond generalizations and stereotypical thinking.
